Hudson Bruny
Hudson Bruny is a Haitian artist based in the United States whose practice moves between abstraction, architecture, and philosophy.
Beginning his artistic journey in 1999, Bruny creates works shaped by lines, layered forms, and structural elements, drawing on his background in architecture. Working across acrylic, ink, spray paint, wax, and pastel, he explores memory, possibility, imagination, and the relationship between structure and spontaneity.
“I never settle into inertia. I engage in the highly sacred architectural union of the knowledge of art, and I create for the dream of the cosmos.”
— Hudson Bruny
How has architectural thinking shaped the way you construct your paintings?
In absorbing the principle defined by architecture: elevating beauty beyond the ordinary. I never settle into inertia. I engage with the highly sacred architectural union of artistic knowledge, creating for the dream of a need announced by the cosmos of our chosen myths, venturing into the depths of our principles.
In love with what we are, the storm is the reality of our becoming — a way of establishing the grain of our dream forever within the making of ideas, time, and the traditions devoted to the high art of the mythologised gesture and the unfolding of human history.

How has your artistic practice evolved from your early beginnings with pencil and paper to your current abstract language?
It chose to evolve between the night and the hope of the day, decided after effort, bringing light to the happiest life through the art of wandering within the modernity of another’s passionate taste.
I began painting one day to heal myself from the vocation of others, from the cinema of love and the fleeting spirit of thought. I passed through the door of consciousness of its existence to move quickly toward the wonders of the bridge between reality and the absolute, descending into my daily manifestations through the spirit of knowledge.
Along the road of my artistic journey, I learned to do everything I could to overcome my limitations. I brought my heart toward reason, imagination, and the living world, searching for the future to be created through the epic landscapes of the absurd and the possibilities of what could be.

What determines your choice of materials for a particular work?
Nothing is planned. Often, I take a long shower before beginning a work, so as not to mislead it in matters of the spirit. Water teaches me which materials are necessary for its conviction of one day becoming a great, audacious legend of the possible within the matter of the impossible.
In its nothingness, every work must be able to indicate the materials that need to be drawn from the drawer of my soul, long before the freedom of its nature is verified through my intelligence. Helping its disordered body move forward through matter — that is what concerns me in the adventure of my dreams.
What do “the impenetrable” and “the impossible” represent for you, and how do you translate them into abstraction?
In the night of my pictorial prophecy, I welcome what is essential for the harvest of the future, formed within my veins and shaped by the death of the geometric taste of the market.
The impenetrable and the impossible desire the love of the viewer’s eyes. For me, they represent the complete infidelity of those gods at the summit who obey nothing of our human world.
I translate them through a distinguished ugliness, decomposed and moving backward through the incomprehensible crowd of faith and thought, searching for a harmonious plan of the rigorous future and the past.
Their translation depends on the tendency of my heart to imagine what is true or false, and on the magic of the world within my buried light.

Your work speaks about transforming goodness into future ideas. How does the concept of the future influence the subjects or forms you create?
The future is enough in itself to occupy the highest plane of realities transformed into lessons of the possible, united with the sensitive.
Recovering something ideally long lost within the cement of mysterious failures is a beautiful effort of taste, within the realm of a need evoked by beauty.
The concept of the future influences my work absolutely, as a fleeting gesture of truth that educates and brings the past under control through the daring reason of a river of possibility, animated by a value carried in every direction.

How do you use colour, structure, gesture, or composition to communicate your search for hope and joy within the noise?
In the permanent structure of the unfinished, standing within our walls without the dream of excuse, I judge the protocol of abuse. In a city free to think wisdom, everything is meaningless without the addition of an evolved gaze upon the absurd situation of the tree rooted in reality.
In truth, I give myself completely to the creation of a painting of the earth, distorted in its customs and possibilities, transformed from what was once planned as truth.
It is not I who manipulate the power of the physical spirit within the project. Rather, it is the hidden god of the desire for art and beauty that breathes through the permanence of detail, meeting the soul abandoned in almost everything.

How has living in America influenced the evolution of your artistic perspective?
I have the city within my ambition to live in the material of a starry novel, at levels beyond the human, within nature trapped in its small corner.
America, for me, is the slaughterhouse of disasters of a taste that does not evolve, yet my lines here unfold on a breathtaking scale, confronting the distance imposed upon life and the gaze of the stillness around me.
Here, I correct my nerves, long trampled by the essential spirit of the community, and my painting becomes the star that corrects the hell of the day — an adventure of social celebration for all, shaped by the magical mind of taste and health.

Can you talk about how experimentation with materials or techniques leads you to unexpected outcomes?
The scientific love of rain opens my horizons toward what is essential, established in the philosophy of the moment and the possibilities of nations, kindness, light, and taste.
I experiment with writing, paper, the pen, and the pencil, each one opening another path through the history of painting. I am fascinated by what happens when materials move beyond their expected purpose and enter into the realm of imagination.
I experiment because I want to break the fire of jealousy and limitation in our realities, to explore the power of the spirit through the materials I use. I am amazed when I realise that my heart rejects the tools that consume our values and instead searches for the unexpected, the surreal, and the beautiful.
The effort that leads toward the essence of matter is, for me, a sacred part of the journey.

How do photography, theatre, and writing influence your approach to painting and abstract expression?
The power to create a society through its possible forms is a daring encounter with the imagination and the educated spirit.
Photography is essential to me. It carries the pen through the clouds of need, while theatre is the courageous blood of the sacred spirit. I cannot do without any of these forms of expression; each one shapes the tenderness of the path of hope within my soul.
Through their different languages and ways of seeing, they all contribute to the development of my artistic practice and to the way I approach painting

Where do you see your artistic practice moving next, and what new possibilities are you interested in exploring?
I see it moving toward the strange city of virtue, within the envelope of art, developing a possible conjunction for everyone through the gaze of a soul that cannot imagine light without passing through the intensity of the darkness of reality.
I want to explore the insecurity established within darkness, the injustice of social customs, and the death that suddenly expands within our principles. I also want to explore the divinity of justice through the courage of those who are persecuted and still dare to dream of the reality they deserve.
The immense defeat of the empire of the soul’s nightmare awaits us in the masterpieces of our courage, dedicated to the highest degree of the spirit’s need for salvation within the material of the present moment.
