THE GREEK EFFECT
One day in Athens? Here's exactly what you shouldn't miss.
Athens isn't just about ancient temples and beautiful streets, it's a city where every corner smells like fresh bread, grilled souvlaki, warm pastries, and strong Greek coffee. If you're visiting for our upcoming exhibition (or simply exploring the city), we've put together a delicious one-day food guide to help you experience Athens like a local.
Start Your Morning with a Greek Pie
Forget cereal. Walk into a local bakery and order a warm spanakopita (spinach pie) or tiropita (cheese pie). Crispy, buttery, and impossible to eat just one.
Slow Down with a Greek Coffee
Greeks don't rush coffee, they make an event out of it. Find a small café, order a traditional Greek coffee or an iced freddo espresso, sit outside, and spend a little longer than you planned watching the city go by.
Lunch Means Souvlaki
No trip to Athens is complete without trying authentic souvlaki or gyros. Fresh pita, grilled meat (or vegetables), creamy tzatziki, tomatoes, onions... simple ingredients, unforgettable flavour.
Save Room for Loukoumades
These little golden dough balls are covered in honey, cinnamon, and sometimes chocolate or pistachios. Think doughnuts... but somehow even better.
End the Day Like a Local
As the sun begins to set, head to a traditional taverna. Order a selection of small plates to share, fresh Greek salad, grilled halloumi, tzatziki, olives, seafood, and a glass of local wine. In Greece, food is never just food, it's about conversation, laughter, and staying at the table just a little longer.
